Ryan Wehrle drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie Staten Island up with Lowell and then in the bottom of the eleventh, Justin Snyder singled home Donald Hollingsworth for the game winner. Snyder finished the game three for five and he drove in two runs while Christopher Raber went three for four with a double and a walk.
Jonathan Ortiz improved to 2-0 with the win. He gave up a hit and he struck out one in two shutout innings of relief in extra frames.
Staten Island blew a 1-0 lead in the top of the eighth only to come back and win it in the bottom half of the frame with two runs to make it a 3-2 final. The game winning run was a two RBI single by Jose Gil. Ryan Wehrle was the only Yankee hitter with two hits and he was also the only one to rack up an extra base hit with a double.
Jonathan Ortiz improved to 1-1 with 1 1/3 innings of shutout relief. He walked one and struck out four while Ryan Pope threw four shutout innings and struck out six in his start.
Jacinto Gonell improved to 1-0 on the season in the GCL Yankees 5-2 win over the GCL Blue Jays. He gave up two hits and two walks with six strikeouts in four shutout innings.
Ryan Wehrle doubled, drew two walks and scored two runs. Melky Mesa went two for four with a double, a run and an RBI.
The GCL Yankees took care of the GCL Phillies 7-1 and it was Ryan Wehrle who was the biggest run producer at the plate. He went two for three with a homerun and three RBIs. Andres Perez went three for four with a homerun and two RBIs.
Casey Erickson improved to 2-0 on the season. He gave up five hits and a walk with four strikeouts in 3 2/3 shutout innings of relief.
Noel Castillo improved to 2-0 on the season with four shutout innings of relief in the GCL Yankees 3-2 win over the GCL Indians. He gave up two hits and a walk with four strikeouts.
Ryan Wehrle doubled and drove in a run. Ben Blumenthal had the only other extra base hit with a triple.
The GCL Yankees lost their opener 2-1 but it wasn’t because their pitchers didn’t step up. Noel Castillo gave up just one run on four hits with six strikeouts in four innings in his start, and despite taking the loss, Jairo Heredia gave up a run in 3 2/3 and he struck out five.
The offense managed just five hits in the game. Ryan Wehrle had two of those and Prilys Cuello went one of three with a walk and an RBI.
