John Axford fell to 0-3 on the season with a rough start in the RiverDogs 10-3 loss to West Virginia. He gave up six runs (five earned) on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts in three innings.
Kevin Smith went three for five with a homerun and three RBIs. Mitchell Hilligoss singled twice and doubled in the loss.
Staten Island took care of Tri-City 3-2 and the pitching effort was a team one as four pitchers combined to hold Tri-City to two runs on six hits. John Axford was a notch above the rest and he picked up the win to improve to 1-1. He gave up just one hit with three strikeouts in three shutout innings of relief.
Damon Sublett went three for five with a double and two RBIs. Justin Snyder went three for five with two doubles, an RBI and two runs.
The RiverDogs and Sand Gnats each took a game in their doubleheader. In the first game, the RiverDogs scored three late runs but the comeback came up short in a 4-3 loss. John Axford took the loss and he gave up three runs in two innings while Brian Aragon went one for three with two RBIs. Mitchell Hilligoss singled and stole two bases.
Game two went quite a bit better with a 2-1 win. David Robertson picked up the win with two innings of shutout relief. Mitchell Hilligoss hit a solo homerun and he extended hit new hitting streak to two games. Kyle Anson went two for three with a solo homerun.
