Scott Patterson gave up an unearned run in the fourteenth inning as Trenton lost to Binghamton 3-2 in fourteen innings. Kevin Whelan was one of the more impressive pitchers to throw for the Thunder. He threw three shutout innings and he struck out five.
Carlos Mendoza was the hitting star in the loss. He went three for six with a double and a run.
Justin Pope gave up two run in the top of the eleventh as the Thunder lost to the Fisher Cats 7-5. Pope dropped to 1-1 on the season and the eleventh inning was his third inning of work.
Alberto Gonzalez singled three times and drew a walk in the loss. Carlos Mendoza went two for five with a double and two RBIs.
Ian Kennedy picked up the win in his first Double A start although it was more because of the run support then anything. He gave up four runs on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts in five innings. The toughest jump is from High A to Double A so some growing pains should be expected and while the ERA looks a bit bloated, this was a decent enough start from someone making his Double A debut. I’m looking forward to seeing how he does at this advanced level the rest of the season.
Shawn Garrett had a huge day at the plate. He went three for five with two doubles, a homerun, five RBIs and two runs. Carlos Mendoza went two for two with a double, three RBIs and a run.
Alan Horne had another nice start in the Thuners’ win 7-6 win over the Defenders. He gave up four runs (one earned) on seven hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in six innings. The win improved Horne’s record to 5-2 and he now has 73 strikeouts in 59 innings.
Carlos Mendoza went one for three with two walks and three runs scored. Aaron Baldiris went three for four with a solo homerun and two runs scored.
Trenton played two and came away with just one win as they remained in first place in their division. They couldn’t get the offense going in a 4-1 loss in the opener. Noah Hall hit a solo homerun for the only Thunder run of the game. Brett Smith gave up three runs on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts in five innings and the loss dropped him to 4-2 on the season.
In game two, the Thunder won 3-0 and Michael Gardner threw four shutout innings. Kevin Whelan improved to 3-0 on the season with two shutout innings of relief. He struck out four and he’s now struck out 34 hitters in 25 innings all without giving up a homerun. Carlos Mendoza doubled, drew a walk and scored two runs in the win.
